The Ushindi Award Soapstone is inspired by Kenya's rich tradition of soapstone carving, associated with the Kisii soapstone. The making process begins with selecting suitable soapstone, which is then carefully cut and carved into the desired form. Artisans refine the shape by hand, smooth the surface, and polish the piece before applying dye and decorative finishing to achieve its final appearance.
Soapstone carving has become closely associated with the cultural and artistic identity of the Kisii region. Artisans have developed skills for transforming the naturally soft stone into sculptures, decorative objects, functional items, and contemporary artistic pieces. The hand-carving techniques involved in creating these products reflect generations of knowledge and craftsmanship within the region.
